Stab in the back, Will it immobilize?

So say an attacker comes in with a gun, and another person has a chance to sneak up and take 1-2 stabs into the back of the attacker, would that be sufficient to mobilize the attacker from retaliating? If not, Is there a way you could stab them to keep them from turning around and shooting you?
