When to test for pregnancy?

I'm a day late for my period and I'm NEVER late. AF comes like clockwork. I tested this morning, but it was negative. Is it too soon to test? I'm almost positive I'm pregnant, but do I need to wait until a week after my missed period to test again? I know HPT deal with hCG.. maybe I don't have enough in my system yet?
