Registering clothing brand name?

How do I go about registering a clothing brand name, from what I have seen so far it seems pretty complicated. Can anyone break down all the legalities involved? Do I just register the name or do I have to have a definite logo design? How do I search and insure it's not already registered? Sorry for all the questions I'm just really lost.
